The Morning I Met Fire Cider (And Why We’ve Been Friends Ever Since)

The Morning I Met Fire Cider (And Why We’ve Been Friends Ever Since)

It was a gray, bone-cold morning in early January — the kind where your breath fogs the window before you’ve even opened it. I had woken up groggy, throat scratchy, and already feeling behind before my feet hit the floor. In short: the perfect day to meet fire cider.

A friend had dropped off a mason jar a week earlier with a scribbled label: Fire Cider — shake well, take daily, thank me later. At the time, I’d chuckled and tucked it behind the olive oil, next to other well-meaning things I never use (hello, forgotten chia seeds). But that morning, desperate for something — anything — to fight the fog and keep the looming cold at bay, I remembered the jar.

I shook it. Opened it. Immediately questioned my life choices.

The smell was intense: vinegar sharp, garlic strong, and something spicy that made my eyes water. Still, I poured a small shot glass full, closed my eyes, and took it down like a dare.

🔥 Boom. 🔥

Instant heat. Nose cleared. Eyes wide. I wasn’t sure if I loved it or hated it, but I was sure I was awake. Within minutes, I felt warmth spreading from my chest to my fingertips — a kind of kickstart my usual coffee couldn’t dream of delivering.

Over the next few days, I kept taking it. Just a tablespoon in the morning, sometimes with honey stirred in. The scratchy throat never turned into a full-blown cold. My digestion felt better. And — maybe this was placebo, or maybe it was magic — I just felt more alive.

Eventually, I learned more about what was in it: apple cider vinegar, garlic, ginger, horseradish, turmeric, hot peppers, sometimes citrus, sometimes rosemary or onion. A witch’s brew of wellness if ever there was one. And it wasn’t new — herbalists have been making versions of this for decades, using the fiery concoction as a go-to immune booster and all-around health tonic.

The next fall, I made my own big batch. I chopped onions with teary eyes, grated fresh horseradish like I’m prepping for a culinary storm, and tuck my jars away to steep. There’s something empowering about making your own medicine — no pharmacy needed, just roots, herbs, vinegar, and time.  That said, if I was going to take it daily, it had to taste better.  Pineapple Fire Cider was born.  The addition of pineapple, citrus and honey was the trick.

Fire cider isn’t for everyone. It’s bold. It’s unapologetically pungent. But if you’re open to a daily ritual that feels like a warrior’s elixir — one that might just keep the sniffles and sluggishness at bay — I say give it a shot.

You’ll thank me later.

Interested in tasting my Pineapple Fire Cider? Let me know — I’ll happily give you a sample. But fair warning: once you meet fire cider, you might never want to spend another winter without it.
